Orthodontics in quarantine: What problems could arise and how to solve them from home Take note of these recommendations to solve small emergencies that could arise in your fixed braces or transparent aligners COVID-19 has not stopped us.
At Clínica Cervera we continue to be available for all patients who need it in emergency cases.
However, if quarantine has caught you in the middle of orthodontic treatment, we would like to give you some recommendations so you can solve some small problems that could arise in your fixed orthodontic appliances (braces) or removable (aligners) without having to leave home.
As a general recommendation, you should know that prevention is now more important than ever as it will help you avoid oral problems that, ultimately, could force you to break confinement to receive care.
For this reason, brush your teeth thoroughly, dedicating at least 3 minutes, 3 times a day, and accompany it with a fluoride mouthwash.
Frequent emergencies with clear aligners If an aligner scratches you, use a nail file to file down the end where it bothers you.
Then, use an eraser to polish it.
If an “attachment” falls, don’t worry.
Continue changing your splints as normal, as instructed by your orthodontist.
When you return to the clinic, we will place the “attachment”.
If you drop a button that has an elastic attached to it, don’t put any of the elastics on (not just this elastic, but any).
Continue placing the splints as the orthodontist instructed you.
If you don’t have any rubber bands left, contact us and we will assess the best way to get them to you.
If you have no more aligners left, wear the last one for at least 12 hours a day. This will ensure that the treatment remains stable and there are no relapse movements.
Frequent emergencies with fixed orthodontics If a tube becomes detached at the end of the upper or lower arch, it could lift up a little and get stuck in the back of your mouth.
In these cases, you can cover the arch with hygienic wax (available in pharmacies) so that it does not puncture, and request an emergency visit to be treated at the clinic.
If the chain (which has continuous rubber bands) breaks, cut it with scissors in the area where it broke.
The orthodontist will replace it for you when you return to the clinic.
If a bracket comes off and moves across the arch, you must remove it.
Use tweezers to separate the arch from the bracket a little and remove it (from above or below).
If the rubbing causes you any sores, it is advisable to cover the entire appliance with wax and rinse with any mouthwash containing chlorhexidine (available in pharmacies).
If it is a large wound, we recommend applying a topical substance (any bioadhesive gel containing hyaluronic acid or chlorhexidine), which will cause it to heal in 2-3 days.
These are just some tips that can help you temporarily solve small problems that may arise during quarantine with your fixed or removable orthodontic appliances.
However, at Clínica Cervera we keep our doors open to treat emergencies by appointment and, if you have any problems, you can contact us by phone (972 21 17 27) or e-mail ( info@clinicacervera.es ). + info: Tips that will help you solve different oral situations
