From its birth in 1965 to the present day, implantology has developed at a rapid pace in terms of materials, techniques and technology.

This rapid evolution is perhaps the cause of the existence of some myths surrounding the so-called “third dentition”: can dental implants be rejected by the body?, is the treatment long?, what happens if I have little bone?…

At Clínica Cervera we answer the most frequently asked questions about dental implants.
##NUM##1.

Can’t I get dental implants because I don’t have enough bone?

Lack of bone is no longer an impediment to implant placement.

There are different techniques that allow the regeneration of lost bone using synthetic or biological substitutes that stimulate the creation of new bone and thus be able to place implants.
##NUM##2.

Can they be rejected by the body?

Most implants are made with surgical titanium, a biocompatible, bioinert material, with the ability to integrate with the bone (osseointegration) and with good tolerance by soft tissues (gums).

It is unlikely that rejection will occur, but if it were the case, the implant would have to be removed and could be replaced by another after healing.
##NUM##3.

Are implants only for older people who have lost their teeth?

Implants can be placed once the maxillary and mandibular bones have finished their period of bone growth, that is, at approximately 18 years of age.

From then on, there are no age limitations and any time is good for those patients who are missing one or more teeth, as long as they have a good state of oral health.
##NUM##4.

Is it a painful and long treatment?

In most cases, the intervention is performed with local anesthesia, so the discomfort is minimal or non-existent.

Only some people may experience some inflammation.

Postoperatively, if you follow the dentist’s recommendations, it is not very bothersome.

On the other hand, the placement of the implant is quick.

Once placed, you generally have to wait a few months for it to osseointegrate and for the definitive teeth or crowns to be placed.

During this time, temporary prostheses can be used.
##NUM##5.

Do dental implants last a lifetime?

According to data from the Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration (SEPA), 98% of implants integrate into the bone after placement and, at 15 years old, more than 90% of those placed continue to function properly.

However, it cannot be 100% guaranteed that dental implants will last a lifetime, as it depends on multiple factors.

Fundamentally, the patient’s particularities.

Poor oral hygiene, being a smoker, poorly controlled diabetes, having previously suffered from periodontal problems, osteoporosis and even bruxism are some factors that can generate complications.

Other causes that influence the duration of implants are the experience and professionalism of the dentist who placed them and, very especially, the maintenance treatment that is carried out subsequently.
##NUM##6.

Can I finally forget about my toothbrush?

Dental implants must be cared for just as well as natural teeth, that is, with good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to our dentist.

If we ignore these treatments, we may end up suffering from so-called peri-implant diseases that are caused by the accumulation of bacteria and calculus (“tartar”) around the implants. + info: Dental implants

[73
post-3524","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria-tractaments
["GET
