A dental implant may seem “unbreakable”, but it has an Achilles heel: the gum and bone surrounding it.

If they get sick, the implant may end up failing.

And this is precisely what happens with the so-called peri-implant diseases, a pathology of infectious origin that affects one in four people with implants.

Below, we explain what causes them, how to prevent them and what their treatments are.

Dental implants have revolutionized the world of dentistry; a “third dentition” that allows us to recover the functionality and aesthetics of our smile with very high success rates.

However, this does not mean that complications cannot arise if certain risk factors are present.

In the case of peri-implantitis, these factors are mainly smoking, a history of periodontitis and poor oral hygiene.

Poorly controlled diabetes or inappropriate prosthesis design are other factors that can promote its appearance or development.

Mucositis: the precursor to peri-implantitis Peri-implant diseases are classified into two large groups: Peri-implant mucositis.

It affects the mucous membranes surrounding the implants, causing inflammation and bleeding.

It is currently estimated that practically one in two implants ends up presenting this disease.

Peri-implantitis.

In this case, not only do the mucous membranes become inflamed and bleed, but there is also a progressive loss of the bone that holds the implant.

One in four implant wearers has peri-implantitis.

A very high number if we consider that in Spain around 800,000 implants are placed per year.

Mucositis is the precursor to peri-implantitis.

Fortunately, it is a reversible process if the appropriate therapeutic measures are followed, but if it is not treated it will end up leading to peri-implantitis, which is more complex to treat and causes aesthetic sequelae, such as recessions in the gums that can leave the implants exposed.

If we do not act in time, the chances of losing the affected implants are high.

Take care of your implant as if it were a natural tooth. A dental implant requires the same care as a natural tooth.

Therefore, prevention is key to avoiding diseases such as peri-implantitis.

It is important to maintain control of bacterial plaque through good oral hygiene and attending regular maintenance with the dentist.

If prevention fails and we already have a peri-implant lesion, it will be necessary to initiate non-surgical treatment to disinfect the affected area using curettes, ultrasound, laser… Depending on the degree of the disease, it may be necessary to perform surgical treatment, in which different techniques (resective, regenerative or combined) would be used, depending on each specific case.

Dental implants can last a lifetime as long as we keep peri-implant diseases at bay.

We must attend our dentist appointment to detect them in time, treat them with a good professional if they appear, and raise awareness to prevent them appropriately.

[73
post-3511","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria-tractaments
["GET
