A tooth extraction is a simple procedure that should not present any complications.

And, if there were any, it almost always occurs during the postoperative period.

One of the most common is dry socket, an alteration in wound healing.

This happens when the blood clot that normally forms after an extraction does not develop normally, displaces or dissolves before the wound has healed.

In these cases, the cavity where the tooth was located remains open, unprotected, leaving the bone and nerves exposed.

This situation can cause the patient very intense pain, not only in the cavity itself, which is also exposed to filling with food debris, but also through the nerves that expand throughout the side of the face.

However, despite the discomfort and annoyance it can cause, dry socket does not last long; the tissue usually recovers on its own within ten to fifteen days.

However, it is essential that you visit your dentist from the very beginning so that he can offer you the appropriate treatment to relieve your pain and speed up this process.

It may consist of:
##BULLET##Cleaning of the extraction area and placing a medicated dressing on the hole.
##BULLET##Change the dressing daily until the pain subsides and the socket begins to heal.
##BULLET##Receive a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, or other more powerful anti-inflammatories depending on the symptoms.

What are the symptoms of alveolitis?

It is very likely that you are suffering from alveolitis if you begin to feel the following symptoms two or three days after tooth extraction:
##BULLET##Intense pain in the extraction area or in an area that can encompass from the cavity to the ears, eyes, forehead or neck.
##BULLET##Partial or total loss of the blood clot (noticeable because the cavity remains empty, dry).
##BULLET##Bone visible in the cavity.
##BULLET##Bad breath or unpleasant odor coming from the mouth.
##BULLET##Unpleasant taste.

I need to have an extraction, can I prevent alveolitis?

Alveolitis is a complication that is difficult to predict, although there are some risk factors that increase the incidence, such as smoking, taking oral contraceptives or having previously suffered from this ailment, as well as infections in the teeth and gums.

For this reason, some guidelines are usually indicated that help with the correct healing of the area and reduce the chances of suffering from dry socket.
##NUM##1.

Before the intervention: if you are a smoker, quit smoking, or reduce your consumption as much as possible and inform the dentist of any medication you are taking.
##NUM##2.

After the intervention: postoperative care.

Antiseptic solutions for the wound, take prescribed anti-inflammatories.

Also, after the extraction of a tooth it is recommended to: – Drink fluids.

It is advisable to drink large amounts of water.

No sugary drinks, alcohol or caffeine. – Avoid doing impact sports or physical exertion for the first 48 hours. – Food.

During the first few days, it is recommended to consume soft foods and take special care with their temperature, choosing cold or lukewarm foods, and chewing on the side of the extraction. – Oral cleaning.

You can brush your teeth, but you should avoid the extraction area.

You will have to wait until the first 24 hours have passed to gently rinse with warm salt water or chlorhexidine.

Dry socket is a condition that affects between 3 and 5% of patients, increasing when it is located in the posterior maxilla, with age and greater tobacco consumption.

And as with almost all oral diseases, prevention is the key to staying out of this percentage.

For this reason, it is essential to maintain good dental hygiene and make regular visits to your dentist.

[73
post-3506","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria-tractaments
["GET
