Anyone who has suffered from periodontal disease is susceptible to suffering from it again, which is why the so-called preventive periodontal treatment or periodontal maintenance is necessary, which should never be confused with prophylaxis or “oral hygiene”.<\/p>\n
We explain what it consists of.<\/p>\n
Having suffered from periodontitis not only means that we cannot suffer from it again, but there is even a greater probability that this will happen, as also happens with other diseases, such as myocardial infarction.<\/p>\n
Although this susceptibility cannot be eliminated, fortunately we can reduce it if we keep the risk factors that promote the appearance and development of periodontal disease under control, such as smoking, and if we follow a preventive program with our dentist.<\/p>\n
Basically, through preventive periodontal treatment we monitor the health of the gums, apply prevention techniques and act if we detect an outbreak of the disease.<\/p>\n
Specifically, periodontal maintenance consists of: Monitoring.<\/p>\n
We periodically monitor the condition of the gums (generally, two to four times a year depending on the characteristics and susceptibility of each patient) to detect early any possible recurrence of periodontitis.<\/p>\n
