{"id":2823,"date":"2018-11-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/actualitat\/the-effects-of-diabetes-on-oral-health\/"},"modified":"2018-11-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T22:00:00","slug":"the-effects-of-diabetes-on-oral-health","status":"publish","type":"actualitat","link":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/news\/the-effects-of-diabetes-on-oral-health\/","title":{"rendered":"The effects of diabetes on oral health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Periodontitis is one of the most common complications in diabetic patients, who are three times more likely to suffer from this gum disease. &#8220;Epidemic&#8221;, &#8220;21st century&#8221; or &#8220;silent&#8221; are the main words you will read in any text to define diabetes, a disease that affects more than 420 million people in the world (8.5% of the population) and which will be the seventh cause of mortality by 2030, according to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p>In Spain, 13.8% of people over the age of 18 have type 2 diabetes (also called non-insulin-dependent) and, what is more worrying, 6% have not been diagnosed with it, according to the Spanish Diabetes Society (SED). Visits to the dentist are an opportunity to combat this disease.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>We take advantage of the fact that today, November 14, is World Diabetes Day and we&#8217;ll tell you about it.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between diabetes and oral health is bidirectional and feedback-driven: periodontitis is one of the most frequent complications of diabetes; but diabetic patients are also up to three times more likely to suffer from this gum disease.<\/p>\n<p>Although this link between diabetes and periodontitis is scientifically proven, among the healthy habits that are instilled in diabetic patients (balanced diet, regular physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption, etc.) there is no advice on oral hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration (SEPA) and the SED Foundation offer some reasons why they should be taken into account:<br \/>\n ##BULLET##Periodontal diseases are more common in diabetics.<br \/>\n ##BULLET##Periodontitis progresses faster in diabetics, especially in those with poor control.<br \/>\n ##BULLET##Diabetics are more likely to suffer from oral conditions, such as alterations in taste perception, opportunistic infections (oral candidiasis, phycomycosis or mucormycosis) or xerostomia or dry mouth syndrome, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Counteract the consequences To neutralize the effects of diabetes on oral health, the SED recommends:<br \/>\n ##NUM##1.<\/p>\n<p>Maintain blood glucose levels close to normal.<br \/>\n##NUM##2.<\/p>\n<p>Daily oral self-examination, with special attention to gum health.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that there are signs that help you know if your gums are not healthy.<br \/>\n##NUM##3.<\/p>\n<p>Brushing at least twice a day, without forgetting interdental hygiene.<br \/>\n##NUM##4.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the dentist twice a year for check-ups and dental hygiene, and also when any problem arises.<br \/>\n##NUM##5.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid tobacco.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"template":"","categoria":[67],"class_list":["post-2823","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","hentry","categoria-salut-bucodental"],"meta_box":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/actualitat\/2823","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/actualitat"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/actualitat"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2823"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"categoria","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clinicacervera.es\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categoria?post=2823"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
