Sleeping is not only a pleasure, but also a necessity.

The quality of sleep affects the health of our body in many aspects, including oral health.

According to the General Council of Colleges of Physiotherapists of Spain, there is no ideal posture for everyone, but there are healthier postures depending on the specific characteristics of each person.

We will give you the keys so you know what the best position is for you based on the particularities of your mouth.

Proper postural hygiene will promote some vital functions and save us from possible muscle discomfort.

As a general rule, the best posture will be the one that maintains the body’s curvatures in their physiological position, so the most advisable are to sleep on your side or face up.

Face up: to prevent neck and back pain Sleeping face up (supine position) is one of the most neutral positions since the spine rests straight.

It helps prevent neck and back pain and is indicated for those people who have: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction.

These disorders cause, among other symptoms, pain in the jaw, face and neck, and are closely related to pressure and malocclusions (improper bite).

Sleeping on your face will allow us to free our jaw from pressure.

Bruxism (teeth grinding).

If we press or grind our teeth while we sleep, a supine position will make the muscles in our face rest more relaxed and, therefore, we will exert less pressure between our teeth.

On your side: to reduce snoring and apnea Sleeping on your side (lateral decubitus) also prevents neck and back pain, but it also reduces snoring, improves breathing and reduces gastroesophageal reflux.

It is more recommended for people who snore or have sleep apnea, problems that can be exacerbated if we sleep face up since in these cases the tongue moves to the pharynx and obstructs the passage of air.

This position is also the most suitable for pregnant women, preferably on the left side, as it avoids compression of the vena cava and promotes the circulatory state of the placenta; and for people with low back pain.

Face down: the position to avoid Sleeping face down (prone position) is totally discouraged by experts since in this position we completely modify the natural curvature of our spine.

It forces us to rotate it excessively, which can generate tendonitis, low back pain, cervical pain… In short, sleeping face down is a position that we should discard, while sleeping face up or on our side will depend on our particular characteristics or specific ailments (back pain, breathing problems, etc.) and on how comfortable each of these two positions is for us.

[67
post-2805","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","hentry","categoria-salut-bucodental
["GET
