A recent headline has brought to light a controversial topic: “There is a boom in cavities in children due to overuse of breastfeeding”.

Fortunately, that’s not entirely true.

Breastfeeding does not cause cavities, although it could be considered a risk factor if it is combined with poor oral hygiene, the consumption of sugary complementary foods in the diet, individual susceptibility, the transmission of bacteria by parents, etc.

Therefore, breast milk, by itself, is not cryogenic.

However, several studies have shown that, in combination with other carbohydrates or administered with high frequency during the night or on demand by the child, it is associated with early caries.

These are cavities that appear when the tooth erupts, on smooth surfaces, and that progress rapidly, causing a great impact on the teeth.

In what cases can breastfeeding cause tooth decay?

As we say, although breast milk, due to the fact that it contains lactose, can cause cavities, other factors must also be present.

According to the Spanish Society of Pediatric Dentistry, tooth decay in infants can occur at an early age because, among other reasons: Nighttime breastfeeding has been prolonged without restrictions and without taking the necessary hygiene measures.

The child’s diet has included sugary complementary foods without sufficient fluoride protection.

There has been a transmission of tooth decay bacteria from parents to children, mainly through saliva (by sucking on their pacifier, by kissing them on the mouth, by sharing eating utensils with them, by blowing on their spoon, etc.).

What can we do to reduce the risk of cavities in infants?

The key to preventing cavities is daily oral hygiene.

The earlier it starts, the lower the chances that the child will develop cavities and gum disease (periodontitis).

We must follow the following guidelines: Perform oral hygiene immediately after taking.

Leave space between meals so that the oral pH is restored with the production of saliva and the tooth has time to recover from the acid attacks that occur with each food intake.

Reduce nighttime doses from one year of age.

Avoid using a bottle with juices or carbohydrates.

It can be used with water, for example, using it as a calming element rather than a nutritional one.

In this way, we will significantly reduce the likelihood of cavities and ensure that our child benefits from the proven advantages of breastfeeding, which facilitates adequate growth of the jaws, stimulates the baby’s nasal breathing and reduces the risk of malocclusions.

[71
post-2679","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","hentry","categoria-pathologies
["GET
