What No One Tells You

The lifespan of an implant does not only depend on the treatment, but also on how it is cared for over time.

How long does a dental implant last? This is one of the most frequent questions among patients considering this treatment. And understandably so: an implant represents an investment in health, functionality, and aesthetics, so we all want to know if it will be a lasting solution.

The most honest answer is this: a dental implant can last many years, even decades, but it does not have an exact guaranteed lifespan for everyone. It is not a component that is placed and then forgotten. It requires planning, good hygiene habits, and regular check-ups.

This is precisely where we find what is often not explained: the long-term success of an implant does not depend only on the day it is placed, but on everything that happens afterwards.

So, how many years can a dental implant last?

Generally speaking, dental implants are designed to be a stable and durable solution for replacing lost teeth, provided the patient has good oral health and follows appropriate controls.

But to speak of an exact figure would be oversimplifying.

Some people keep their implants for many, many years without problems, while others may experience complications sooner. The difference usually lies in factors such as gum health, bone quality, daily hygiene, smoking, bruxism, or the regularity of dental visits.

Therefore, rather than asking “how long does an implant last?”, we should ask: “what can I do to make it last as long as possible?”

The Implant and the Crown Are Not the Same

When we talk about dental implants, it is important to differentiate their parts. The implant is the component placed in the bone, acting as an artificial root. A prosthesis or crown is placed on top of it, which is the visible part and fulfills the aesthetic and masticatory function.

This is important because not all parts age equally.

The implant integrated into the bone can be maintained for many years if the surrounding tissues are healthy. The crown, however, can suffer wear, minor fractures, or changes over time, just like other restorative treatments. In some cases, it may be necessary to change the crown without having to replace the implant.

The factors that most influence their lifespan

The useful life of an implant depends on several factors. Some are related to the initial treatment and others to subsequent care.

One of the most important aspects is starting with a good diagnosis. Before placing an implant, it is necessary to assess the general condition of the mouth, gums, available bone, and potential risk factors for each patient. A well-planned treatment will always be more predictable.

Periodontal health also plays a significant role. If a person has lost teeth due to gum disease, they must take special care, because the tissues surrounding the implants can also become inflamed or infected if not properly controlled.

Added to this are other factors such as smoking, which worsens the prognosis of implants; bruxism, which can cause overload; some general diseases, such as poorly controlled diabetes; and, of course, daily hygiene.

Peri-implantitis is one of the main threats to the stability of a dental implant. That is why it is so important to detect any warning signs in the early stages.

How to Care for an Implant to Make It Last Longer

Implant maintenance begins at home. Daily hygiene must be as rigorous as with natural teeth, paying special attention to the area around the implant.

It is advisable to brush your teeth at least twice a day, use interdental brushes or dental floss when indicated, and follow the personalized guidelines set by the professional. In some cases, the use of an irrigator or specific products may also be recommended.

However, home care does not replace check-ups. Regular controls allow for checking the condition of the implant, gum, bone, and prosthesis. Furthermore, professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar in areas that daily brushing does not always reach.

[67,71
post-2658","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria-salut-bucodental","categoria-pathologies
["GET
